Seattle, WA -- Black Entertainment Television (BET) popularized the idea of a "Teen Summit" in the '90s and the Delta G.E.M.S. teen group of the Seattle Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated are bringing that same concept to Seattle in 2009.
The young ladies of the Delta G.E.M.S. program, in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, are holding the inaugural "Teen Summit: Each One, Teach One" April 18, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Yesler Community Center.
This free conference, aimed at 15-18 year old males and females of color, will provide a platform for teens from various backgrounds and high schools to share, learn and network with one another. The event will feature a continental breakfast, group discussions, networking lunch, giveaways and conclude with a speaker's panel. The discussions and final speaker's panel will focus on topics selected by teens and include: Healthy Relationships: Between Young Ladies & Young Men; African American Identity: the Hip Hop Influence; and Youth Violence: How Can Teens Help, which will be lead by a panel of individuals who are active with the city of Seattle's Youth Violence Initiative.
"I really hope my fellow teenagers come out in full force and have courage to speak out about these important issues of our day and also gain the knowledge they need to handle day-to-day situations they may not know how to handle", said 15-year-old Delta G.E.M.S. participant Taryn Evans of Holy Names Academy. "This event was planned and organized by teens, as they need a chance to speak and learn from each other", said Delta G.E.M.S. Chairpersons, Felicia Kline and Francesca Delgado.
