In the spirit of promoting equal educational opportunities for all people, the Seattle NAACP will hold the innaugural Martin Luther King Jr. County Rally and Workshop for Public Education. The rally and workshop will be held Saturday, October 6 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, 104 17th Ave. S.
The goal is to provide students, teachers and parents with access to information that will help improve the quality of public education in the city of Seattle and King County as well as move toward creating equal educational opportunities for all children. Information will be provided related to college admission, student's rights, mentorship programs, English as a Second Language programs, PTSA information, Advanced Placement Programs, ACTSO and many other topics.
In addition to sharing information about the various programs, King County Council Chair Larry Gossett will be the keynote speaker. Councilman Gossett has long been known for his commitment to educational opportunities. Councilman Gossett was fundamental to the creation of an affirmative action program at the University of Washington.
Other speakers include NAACP's Educational Chair Rev. Beaumante, a retired educator and tireless advocate for the educational rights of children of color, and attorney James Bible, president of the Seattle NAACP.
